An Exciting Chinese Themed Cooking Demo

On Tuesday, April 17th, Highlander Chefs hosted their first demo of the 2018 Spring Quarter! The event was located at one of the University of California Riverside’s go-to places for food and groceries known as The Market and is located near the on-campus housing community, Glen Mor. The demonstration dishes this quarter are themed around different cultures to celebrate a variety of different ways of life. This event took place from 5:30-7:00 pm and featured a Chinese vegetable stir fry with tofu and organic rice. This nutritious dish could be altered to anyone’s preferences, whether a meat lover or a vegan. For example, people can choose to include meat, eggs, or tofu as protein, any variety of vegetables, and both white or brown rice. All of these affordable ingredients can be found at any grocery market and produces many servings. To prepare this dish, all one has to do is wash and cut the vegetables and source of protein. Tofu, which was used at the event, was marinated in soy sauce for flavor. The rice was cooked in a rice cooker. An alternative solution to cooking rice, if one does not have this device, is using a pot to boil the rice and water. The tofu and vegetables were cooked together and once finished, were added to the cooked rice. This demonstration was to educate people on the multitude of recipes that yield a delicious dish that people might not have known how to prepare. The dish is simple enough that even those with very little cooking experience can create it. It gives college students a different choice in foods other than microwaveable meals or fast foods.
